What is web hosting?

When you want to set up a website, the pages, documents and pictures you want to publish on this site to your viewers has to be stored in a computer where these viewers can access them. This computer can’t be the computer you have at home; even if you have a fast and sufficient computer, the internet speed will be insufficient.
For this reason it needs to be on a computer that is optimized for Internet sharing, they need to be on a computer that has a very fast connection to the internet and can serve your viewers with such a speed, this is why it’s called a server.
The computers of storing all of this information to be viewed by your viewers are call called web servers; the process of sharing all of this data is called webhosting.
There are hundreds of companies that handle these web hosting procedures and each of these companies give you the option of choosing a hosting package deal appropriate for your needs.

SPEED:
The download speed of your pages is an important factor here. There are three reasons as to why a page being viewed, download slowly or not. The first of these is the computer you have connected to the internet with isn’t fast enough.
The second of these reasons can be connected to the server you have gotten your hosting from. If the server you have gotten your hosting from is of an insufficient speed, or is working over capacity, the download speed will naturally be slow.
For the third, we would like to remind you that the page size and the programs in which these sites have been prepared can have an effect on the speed.  Some sites are prepared in flash and animation programs and in this situation sites that have been prepared using flash and other programs will load much slower than a site that is written in HTML.

SIZE OF SPACE GIVEN:
If we take a look at the other factors; you can see that the size given (how many megabytes) is also variable. However much space you need should be stated according to what you are going to use this hosting for. If you are thinking of setting up a wide ranging website with lots of content, you will need more space. The amount of space given is important for two reasons; the first, as stated above, for the size of the website, the other is for e-mails. Because e-mails shares the same space that the web design does. If the hosting space given is small, problems may arise with the mail trafficking.

SERVER SUPPORT
Another important point for web hosting is that the Server you have rented supports the programs and database you are using.  Today, websites have a wide range of dynamic forms (like job application, request, credit card and sales forms) alongside their information they supply about their companies. The preparation of such forms is done using special programming languages like ASP, PHP and SQL.  For example, for a website with applications prepared in the ASP language to work, the server you are on must have compatible programs installed on the server to support these.
After the hosting procedures have been completed you need to pay attention to these.

What is Reseller Hosting?
If you pay close attention to the packages sold by hosting companies you will see that there are also reseller packages. It is possible to do hosting trading with this reseller hosting without having any infrastructure on the matter whatsoever. You can make a good income by realizing these sales yourself, whilst the hosting company provides for the entire infrastructure. What you will have done will be a sort of brokerage.
If you go to a hosting site, you will see that the packages here are at a higher price than standard packages. But it may have caught your attention that these have many more capabilities. It is possible to have many websites in a single reseller package.
People who buy these packages and then sell them for a higher price, under their own names are called resellers.  So it’s evident that it’s not advisable to buy a hosting package from resellers. Buying direct from the supplier is much wiser than to buy from a middle man or a broker.  This rule stands for hosting services also.
There are many disadvantages of dealing with a reseller:
•    First of all the price of the product is going to more expensive; the mediator has to make many too.
•    The technical service speed will be much slower;  When a problem arises you will have to contact the mediator, the mediator will then have to explain the situation to the technical support department of the company that is providing the hosting (that is, of course if they have understood the problem themselves).

What is a VPS (Virtual Private Server) ?
Virtual Private Server (may also be called Virtual Dedicated Server), is the name of the virtual server that has spawned from the logical compartmentalization of the physical hardware of computers that are of a server quality(like HP Proliant and IBM eServer). On each of these virtual servers, they each have their own separate logical hardware components. So, a virtual server acts just like a physical server and has a  safe and isolated processing system and server software. Due to this it is possible to create many virtual servers that are capable of the same functions, on a single physical server.
The method that is implemented to split up a physical server into logical virtual servers is call virtualization. The aim here is to have all of the server hardware used at their full capacity.  The virtualization method was first developed in the 1970s for IBM’s Mainframe systems. Today, this allows better usage of hardware sources for multi-core systems supported by servers based on AMD and Intel, high frequencies of speed in both processing and memory management, processing systems and server software. This way virtualization can be used widely and at high performance levels
Here are some applications that are good examples of virtualization software:
•    VMWare
•    Microsoft Visual Server
•    Xensource
•    Virtuozzo
•    HyperVM
•    OpenVZ

There are two methods of virtualization, Software and Hardware based:
•    With software based virtualization, virtual servers used the same core of a processing system and need the host’s sources. When it come to web hosting this type of virtualization has big advantages; virtual machines don’t have the need to be rebooted and server sources can be reduced or increased ,in real time, according to necessities. Virtuozzo and HyperVM are virtualization applications with a software base.
•    On hardware based virtualization, the virtualization application connects directly to the physical hardware, increasing and reducing server sources, in real time, is impossible. These types of virtualization media are relatively safer, as they are more insulated. VMWare, Microsoft Virtual Server and Xen are good examples of virtualization applications on a hardware base.

THE ADVANTAGES OF VPS:
•    Safer environment
•    Minimal Costs
•    Faster Access to Circuits
•    Independence of Hardware
•    Easiness of Internal Consistency Applications
VPS’s fill the void between Webhosting and Rented Servers due to the safe environment and financial advantages by lowering total owner costs to a bare minimum. Because VPS’s supply you with a private server environment, you can make changes to the appropriate hardware and software infrastructure, according to your needs. You can, at all times, reduce or increase server sources according to your needs. Also, your applications and data are at the highest safety levels, as VPS is a safe and insulated environment.
Another advantage of VPS is that it can be in circuit very quickly.  Many templates that include processing systems and server software can be generated according to needs, it’s possible to optimize these templates and using these as a base it is possible for a new VPS to be activated in minutes. This feature makes testing and development settings very easy and also allows servers in production to make tests. For by taking the image(data on the server, processing system and programs are backed up with all of their settings) of a working server, it is possible to create a new VPS with all of the same features and settings in an insulated testing environment. The program or security patch to be tested is first applied to the VPS in the testing environment, thus minimizing the effects it has on the current, working server.
Another important advantage that virtualization has brought with it, it that it allows us to be independent of hardware. VPS’s, in contrast to physical servers, run without hardware. Due to this, virtual servers are easily transportable.  For example, a VPS running on the HP Proliant DL 380 GS/ Windows Server 2003 system, can be transferred to an IBM eServer x3650/Linux based virtual platform, without any hardware or software conflicts. This transfer can be done without even turning off the VPS, whilst the virtual server is still running.
Because the VPS can connect to the circuit very fast and be independent of hardware, it makes it possible for internal continuity applications to be applied easier and is an affordable solution.
Because of all these advantages that it supplies, virtualization is being applied at a higher rate. But there are many VPS applications being made in a wrong way for the purpose of saving money. PCs that aren’t even in the server structure are being shown as VPS’s. These VPS applications run are of a  low performance rate , information security and uninterrupted processes are not possible, thus turning these advantages into disadvantages and lowering efficiency. Especially with internal continuity applications, using a wrongly designed VPS of this sort seriously hinder critical work processes.
